Improving Approval Chances
Practical steps that make a surety submission easier to approve.
Published Jul 23, 2026
1. Submit complete files
Incomplete submissions are the most common cause of delay and of avoidable declines. Use the requirements checklist for your bond type and clear every line before endorsement.
2. Match the request to your capacity
A bond amount far beyond your working capital and net worth invites either a decline or a collateral requirement. If the contract is large relative to your balance sheet, prepare for collateral discussion at the start rather than after quotation.
3. Show your track record
Completed projects of similar scope, with obligee names and values, are direct evidence of capability. Certificates of completion and acceptance carry more weight than a narrative.
4. Keep licences and registrations current
Expired PCAB licences, business permits, or BIR registrations stop a file before underwriting begins.
5. Be ready on collateral
Where the insurer requires collateral, common forms include deposits, hold-out on bank accounts, or real estate security. Knowing in advance what you can offer shortens the negotiation.
6. Apply early
Submission deadlines compress underwriting time and reduce the insurer's flexibility. Apply as soon as the requirement is known, not on the day of filing.
7. Be consistent and transparent
Different figures in different documents force verification and erode confidence. Explain adverse items instead of leaving them to be discovered.
8. Build a relationship
A file history of clean, complete submissions and settled premiums makes each subsequent bond easier to place.
None of these steps guarantees approval. Every bond remains subject to the underwriting decision and confirmation of the authorized issuing insurance company.
