How the Surety Bond Process Works
From application to issuance: the stages a Philippine surety bond file passes through.
Published Jul 6, 2026
Stage 1 — Define the requirement
Identify the bond type, bond amount or percentage, validity period, and the exact name of the obligee. Errors here are the most common cause of a re-issued bond.
Stage 2 — Prepare the file
Assemble corporate documents, financial statements, and the contract documents that establish the obligation. A complete file moves markedly faster than a partial one.
Stage 3 — Pre-assessment
The file is reviewed for completeness and consistency before it reaches an insurer. Gaps are flagged back to the applicant as pending or additional requirements.
Stage 4 — Submission to the insurer
The endorsed file goes to an authorized issuing insurance company, which performs its own underwriting.
Stage 5 — Quotation
If acceptable, the insurer issues a quotation showing the premium, documentary stamps, other charges, and any collateral requirement. The insurer may also decline or ask for further requirements.
Stage 6 — Acceptance and payment
The applicant accepts the quotation and settles the premium and charges.
Stage 7 — Issuance and delivery
The insurer issues the bond, and the original is released for filing with the obligee. Keep a copy — you will need it for renewals, releases, and any claim correspondence.
How long it takes
Timelines depend on bond type, contract size, and document completeness. Flag any submission deadline at the start so the file can be prioritised. Nothing in this process guarantees approval: every bond remains subject to the underwriting decision of the authorized issuing insurance company.
